Lieutenant McGoldrick Retires After 42 Years of Service

Staff Report / nyclocal.org

Lieutenant Tommy McGoldrick of Ladder 126 is retiring today after 42 years of service with the New York Fire Department (NYFD). He began his firefighting career in 1982 at Engine 234/Ladder 123 in Brooklyn, where his father also worked. McGoldrick served there for 23 years before being promoted to Lieutenant in 2005 and transferring to Ladder 126 in Queens.

During his extensive career, McGoldrick received three unit citations and one Class “A” service rating. Retired Captain Richard O’Leary, who worked closely with McGoldrick at both Engine 234/Ladder 123 and Ladder 126, praised his ability to connect with firefighters of all experience levels. He described McGoldrick as an exceptional firefighter and acknowledged his modesty in recounting his accomplishments, including life-saving rescues.

As he enters retirement, Lieutenant McGoldrick plans to spend more time with his wife Regina and their daughters, Molly and Kate. He shared advice with new firefighters, encouraging them to stay resilient and continue learning throughout their careers. McGoldrick expressed his appreciation for the relationships he built and the nature of the work, saying, “It’s a great job… a good job for us is a terrible job.”
