**Winter Driving Safety Tips from Caldwell Police Department**
CALDWELL, IDAHO – The Caldwell Police Department has shared valuable tips to help drivers stay safe as snow begins to make an appearance in the area. The department emphasized readiness and attentiveness when navigating potentially hazardous winter road conditions.
Here are the key safety suggestions shared:
- **Check Your Tires**: Ensure your tires are properly inflated and have sufficient tread for better traction on icy or snowy roads. Switching to winter tires can provide added safety.
- **Clear Snow and Ice Completely**: Remove all snow and ice from your vehicle, including the windshield, headlights, taillights, windows, and roof, to maintain visibility and prevent snow from impairing the vision of other drivers.
- **Reduce Speed and Keep Distance**: Winter roads can be slick, which increases stopping time. Drive slower than usual and leave more space between your vehicle and others.
- **Use Headlights Wisely**: In poor visibility from snow, sleet, or fog, turn on your headlights to ensure you and others can see clearly, even during the daytime.
- **Avoid Cruise Control**: To maintain control over speed on slippery roads, avoid using cruise control and keep your foot on the pedal.
- **Handle Skidding Safely**: If your vehicle starts to skid, stay calm. Steer gently in the direction of the skid and avoid slamming on the brakes.
- **Avoid Distractions**: Never use your phone while driving. If you need to take a call or send a text, pull over to a safe area first.
As winter intensifies, the Caldwell Police Department advises all drivers to stay vigilant and prepared for the challenges that come with driving in snowy or icy conditions. Stay safe and stay cautious!
