"ZeroCAL Method Cuts Cement CO2 Emissions by 98%"

Staff Report / LAXlocal.org

A new method called "ZeroCAL" has been developed to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the production of lime for cement. According to a report from UCLA in Los Angeles, the ZeroCAL method could remove up to 98% of CO2 emissions associated with lime production. The process utilizes green hydrogen, renewable seawater, and limestone in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃).

The production also involves converting limestone through a process that results in portlandite (Ca(OH)₂) and immobilizing CO₂ in bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) or carbonate (CO₃²⁻) forms for safe management. This breakthrough aims to address environmental concerns linked to cement manufacturing, which is traditionally known for its high carbon footprint.
